OVER-PAMPERING AND ITS EFFECTS

Over-Pampering and Its Effects on Children

Over-pampering refers to giving children too much attention, care, or freedom, often more than they need. It occurs when parents try to fulfill all the needs or desires of their children without teaching them discipline or letting them face challenges. This is usually done out of love, but it can be very harmful to the child's development.

Effects of Over-Pampering:

1. Children can be overly dependent on their parents to do things for them, no matter how simple the tasks may be.

2. They do not develop necessary life skills such as solving problems, decision-making, and assuming responsibilities.

3.  In times of stress or problems, they feel inadequate or nervous since they never know how to handle situations.

4.  They will begin to think that the world owes them everything and that people should always agree with them.

5.  The over-pampered child will not be able to have good relations because they have been used to being the center of attention.

 How to Prevent Over-Pampering:

1. Set Rules and Boundaries: Teach children that they cannot have everything they want. Rules help them understand limits and discipline.

2. Encourage Independence: Allow children to do age-appropriate tasks on their own, like cleaning their room or packing their school bag.

3. Let Them Face Consequences: Don’t shield them from every mistake. Let them learn from their errors.

4. Teach Problem-Solving: Guide them to solve their problems instead of fixing everything for them.

5. Balance Love with Discipline: Show care but also ensure they follow rules and take responsibility.

I want relate the lesson that I derived from the story" Triumph ofSurgery" by James Herriot.

Summary of "Triumph of Surgery

"Triumph of Surgery" is a story of a rich lady, Mrs. Pumphrey, and her pet dog, Tricki. Mrs. Pumphrey loves Tricki too much and feeds him too much. Tricki grows fat, lazy, and falls ill. The veterinarian, Dr. Herriot, takes Tricki to his clinic and puts him on a very strict diet, allowing him to play with other dogs. Without excessive indulgence, Tricki heals fast and again becomes healthy and active.

Moral Lesson of the Story

The story tells us that too much pampering can hurt, even though it is from love. Mrs. Pumphrey's over- pampering made Tricki ill, but it was Dr. Herriot's strict approach that rescued him. In the same way, children require guidance, discipline, and bounds to grow healthy and independent.

Message for Good Parenting:

Parenting is a mix of love and responsibility. It is natural to want to protect your children, but too much care can stop them from growing into strong, independent individuals. Love your children, but also teach them discipline and responsibility. Let them make mistakes and learn from them. Give them opportunities to solve problems on their own. Prepare them for the real world by allowing them to experience both success and failure.

A good parent is not one who gives everything to the child but helps his child grow into a capable, kind, and confident person. Always remember: parenting is not about shielding children from life but helping them face it with courage and wisdom.
